CUSA: Mercy the Rule in Elimination Games

By Jeremy Mills - May 25, 2006

Just over three hours after Tulane disposed of Marshall 12-1 in eight innings, Memphis put the finishing touches on a seven-inning victory over UAB, putting out the Blazers' fire 13-2.

Starting pitcher Scott McGregor went the distance for the Tigers, scattering five hits without a walk to run his season record to 7-3. Blazer ace Jim Crew took the loss, falling to 6-4 on the season.

The game was ugly in every way for UAB, who finishes their season with a 19-38 record. Four Blazer pitchers combined for six wild pitches, four walks, thirteen hits and twelve earned runs. The defense wasn't any sharper, as four errors dotted the scoreboard. No Blazer batter had more than one hit.

Seven Memphis batters recorded hits on the game, led by shortstop Michael Murphy's 3-for-4 performance. The Tigers raked out six doubles, while Will Petersen scored two and drove in three to go along with two two-baggers. Memphis returns to action tomorrow evening at 6:30 against the loser of this evening's Rice-Southern Miss game.

The first winners' bracket game is scheduled to get underway at 4:00 this afternoon. Brad Lincoln (11-1, 1.67) is the scheduled starter for the Houston Cougars, while Dustin Sasser (5-6, 4.35) will go for the East Carolina Pirates.

Edit: Thanks to Henri for the catch on my original posting, which had Southern Miss winning the early game today. Too much going on down here, and I didn't catch the error.

Jeremy, Tulane disposed Marshall 12-1, not Southern Miss.
Did you read this someplace. You certainly didn't attend the game.
