CUSA: Starting Pitching Problems for the Tigers

By Jeremy Mills - May 27, 2006

For the second time in as many days, the starting pitcher for Memphis failed to make it out of the third inning. In a game the Tigers need to win, Rice leads 3-1 after 3 innings.

Memphis starter Lance Scoggins was knocked out of the game without recording an out in the third inning, but relief ace Drew Jaudon was able to espcape a bases loaded jam to limit the damage to three runs. Joe Savery's two-run single off Scoggins' glove was the key hit in the inning for the Owls.

Craig Crow has been inconsistent for the Owls, but Memphis has stranded five runners through three innings. Crow has allowed five hits and hit a batter while striking out four hitters. The Tigers dented the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, as Bill Moss singled and scored on a Kyle Norrid groundout.

The crowd has finally turned out on Friday, as both the Cougars earlier and Owls now have come out to support their troops nicely (as you'd expect for the hometown teams). The Owl fans know one thing that the Cougars didn't, though, as numerous umbrellas have popped up behind the first base dugout this game.

The flock faithful have been on home plate umpire David Buck's back for most of the game. Craig Crow has twice jumped off the mound after a pitch that he though was strike three, only to have the pitch called a ball. He eventually retired both batters, so no additional damage was done. The tables were turned in the third, as an apparent fair ball down the leftfield line by Kyle Norrid was ruled foul by third base umpire Greg Oros.
