CUSA: Tigers Roar in the Fifth
By Jeremy Mills - May 26, 2006
Memphis answers an earlier crooked number by Southern Miss with a four-spot of their own to take a 6-5 lead after 6 innings at Reckling Park.
Memphis finally sustained a rally in the fifth inning to knock Golden Eagle starter Cliff Russum from the game and claim a two-run lead. Cory Barton led off with a single and advanced to second on a beautiful bunt single by K.K. Chalmers. After Barton advanced to second on a flyout, Chalmers tied the Memphis record with his 39th stolen base of the season. Bill Moss was intentionally walked to load the bases, which Adam Amar promptly cleared with a double to the right-centerfield gap. Amar scored the final Tiger run of the inning on a Robbie Goss single.
Southpaw Dusty Davis has pitched well since taking over for Tiger starter Ben Grisham in the second inning. He's scattered six hits over 4 1/3 innings while striking out four Golden Eagle hitters and allowing a single run. The top four hitters in the Tiger order are 5-for-12 and have scored five and driven in five through six innings.
Most of the production for Southern Miss has come from the bottom of the of the order. The sixth through eighth slots have gone 5-for-8 and been responsible for all five Golden Eagle runs.
The Golden Eagle faithful thought their team had just retaken the lead on a three-run shot down the rightfield line by Toddric Johnson in the bottom of the sixth. However, it was called foul by the first base umpire and Johnson grounded out on the next pitch to end the inning. Needless to say, David Buck is not a popular man right now.
