CUSA: Tough Stretch for Tulane

By Jeremy Mills - May 27, 2006

THe Green Wave hit a rough patch in the third, and as a result the Houston Cougars lead 2-0 after three innings.

After Mark Hamilton led off the bottom of the second with a single, Brad Emaus came up with a chance to do some damage for the Green Wave. A flair to shallow center could have been a single, but Hamilton hesitated since the ball could have been caught and was forced out at second. A Tim Guidry strikeout ended the threat, and through three innings Luis Flores has allowed just the one hit and no runs.

The Wave struggles continued in the next inning, as Stephen Porlier threw nine straight balls to start the third inning. Houston called for the hit-and-run, and the runners were hung out to dry when Isa Garcia popped up to second base. However, Emaus' throw to first sailed into the Cougar dugout and both runners were awarded two bases (allowing Travis Cougot to score). After Matt Weston popped up for the second out, Jake Stewart came in on a wild pitch to score the second run of the game.

A couple other interesting pieces of C-USA Tournament trivia:

This is the first time in the eleven year history of the league that all four of the top seeds have advanced to the semifinals, and the first time that Memphis has advanced this far since 2001.

After Tulane won the tournament as the #2 seed in 1999, the second seed failed to win a game at the tournament for the next five seasons. Things go better for the second seed if they make it this far, as all three times they reached the semifinal round the #2 seed has won the championship.

The last two C-USA Tournament champions have been crowned in Houston. Fourth-seeded TCU won the 2004 championship at Cougar Field, but last year's final game in Hattiesburg was cancelled due to severe weather.
