CUSA: Wild Thing
By Jeremy Mills - May 25, 2006
Blazer starter Jim Crew already had the most wild pitches in C-USA, entering today's elimination game against Memphis with 16 on the season. He added two more to his collection in the first inning, and with the help of two UAB errors the Tigers scored three runs in the initial frame to claim an early lead.
UAB went in order in the bottom of the first, and Memphis followed suit in the 2nd. So 2 complete innings, the Memphis Tigers hold a 3-0 league in
While I'm on the topic of eclectic league leaders, how about these pitching stats:
Southern Miss reliever Ben Wade hit 7 batters in 9 innings pitched. Add in 7 hits and 5 walks, and you have an 8.00 ERA in six appearances. The UAB staff also features the "leader" in this category, as reliever Drew Murray has hit 15 batters in his 52 1/3 innings.
No pitcher in the league has been called for more than four balks, a feat attained by Tulane's Brandon Gomes and Memphis's Neil Schenk.
The Tigers have the league leader in steals -- K.K. Chalmers has swiped 37 bags while only being thrown out three times. Three runners have the dubious distinction of being thrown out seven times: Harrison Eldridge of ECU (11-of-18), Brian Friday of Rice (15-of-22), and Nathan Southard of Tulane (26-of-33).
One last one for good measure: Marshall has the two batters that have grounded into the most double plays this season, as Brendan Murphy had 10 and Brit Vincent 9 heading into the tournament.
