SEC: Doggin' It
By Jessica Garrison - May 24, 2006
Ouch, rough fifth inning for Georgia. Not only did Bulldogs' reliever Stephen Dodson give up three runs, but his team now trails a confident Vanderbilt team by six. Going three-up, three-down in the bottom of the inning doesn't help one bit, either.
The Commmodores seem to be taking advantage of everything -- even in the fourth, when they were so sure they had a man safe at second that the crowd and the players cheered, only to have the cheers morph into boos as the ump called him out, they rallied to shut down the Dogs offense. If I'm Georgia, I'm starting to get worried.
A couple of gems from the post-Game 1 press conference:
USC outfielder Jon Willard, good with home runs, not so good with names...
USC pitcher "Mike [Cisco] pitched a heck of a game. The other guy did well too, but we had to get some runs because [Cisco] was battling too hard not to support him. [Kentucky pitcher Warner] pitched a great game, but he left one in there and I got a good hit."
[Excuse me, there's a Chick -Fil-A ad on the jumbotron. Does it get better than cheerleader-costume clad cows singing "Eat Mor Chikin"? This is family entertainment, folks...And the New York Times food critic would agree with me: Life In The Fast Food Lane, 5/23]
Someone get this man a rewind button...
Kentucky pitcher Tommy Warner: "I wish I could take back that ninth inning. I had pitched 2 1/3 inning in the conference going into today and threw eight scoreless innings."
Unsung (and unhealthy) hero award goes to....
USC head coach Ray Tanner: Closer Wynn "Pelzer was great. he's not feeling well, but was able to close for us. He has some kind of virus or allergies that's been bugging him for four or five days. I saw him at breakfast this morning and could tell he was sick. He gutted it out for us and was able to finish."
In Pelzer's honor, I'm now going to prowl around and see if they serve Chick-Fil-A in the stadium...
