SEC: Hotty Toddy Ends The Party
By Jessica Garrison - May 26, 2006
Alright, I'll say this for the slaughter rule -- it puts a little tension into the waning moments of complete blowouts, as the preservation of Mississippi's ten-run lead became paramount for many parts of the stadium Thursday night.
When LSU slugger Quinn Stewart hit one over the fence in the top of the 6th, the lead was chopped to 9 (and he tied the national home-run leader at 23). But the Ole Miss closed out the inning before the Tigers could do any more damage to their advantage, and Rebel Mark Wright hit a two-run homer to put his team up 12-1 -- those of us with early bedtimes breathed a sigh of cautious relief.
So here we are in the top of the seventh, three outs away from our second slaughter win of the day...
LSU's Michael Hollander grounds out...That's one.
Full count on Bruce Sprowl...and he pops a short fly to second base...catch by Justin Henry...That's two.
Tigers' DH Matt Liuzza fouls one off...misses the second strike by a mile...c'mon baby, c'mon.....
....and goes down swinging! That's three! Ole Miss wins by slaughter, 12-1!
They're singing Hotty Toddy in the stands, and I'm closing the books on two days and actually, only 68 innings of baseball.
Don't worry folks, there's plenty more baseball tomorrow...South Carolina faces Georgia and Alabama takes on LSU in elimination games tomorrow afternoon. See you then!
