SEC: Second Time's The Charm

By Jessica Garrison - May 27, 2006

Vanderbilt closed out the last semifinal game, mercifully perhaps, in 7 innings by beating an exhausted Georgia squad, 11-1.

The mercy rule wasn't just in the ten-run-rule shortened game. Vandy's going to have to face Ole Miss in the final, and the Rebels are looking as hot as ever, and they've played a full game less than the Commodores, which after four long days of baseball may be a crucial boost.

Vanderbilt didn't really pull away today until the fourth inning, and with an eerily familiar early three-run lead, you had to wonder whether Georgia was going to pull out the comeback magic its used in every game this tournament. But Commodore Ryan Flaherty smacked in an RBI double, putting Vandy up 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth, and the proverbial floodgates opened, thanks to Flaherty.

Flaherty's sixth-inning single slipped right past Georgia and bobbled its way to the wall, allowing two runs, and then he brought Alex Feinberg home with an RBI groundout in the seventh. Another bobbled ball by the Georgia defense allowed David Macias to streak home for the game-winning run.
