Athens: Parting of the Red Seas

By - June 10, 2006

Foley Field today is like parting two red seas: the sea of bright red, and the sea of garnet red, as two SEC powers face off today in the Super Regional.

The Carolina fans, as said earlier, are decked out in darker red, some in black, as they sit in the general admission seats along the first base side of the stadium. It’s a hot, humid day in Athens though, and they’ll be sweating soon in no time. Sunscreen is very popular amongst the fans. The general admission seats are rows of bleachers, set tightly to ensure as many fans as possible along the higher parts of the first and third base lines. The first four rows, from the edge of the third base side all the way to the edge of the first, are chairback, and behind home plate is chairback as well.

The Georgia fans, obviously in the majority, are decked in bright red, gray, and white. Although black is a dominant color in the Georgia logo, and the Foley Field scoreboard is black and red from top to bottom, the Bulldog fans are definitely aware of the sweltering heat. They are applause-makers; clapping more than cheering during pre-game. However, give them a great Bulldog play, and the claps turn to raucous cheers in Athens. It seems as if the Bulldog fans are aware of the surroundings around them today, as well as when to cheer.
