Athens: The Grand Finale Begins

By - June 12, 2006

Over 65 games, a brutal SEC schedule, a conference tournament, a regional, and two lopsided games on Saturday and Sunday, it's now or never for Georgia and South Carolina tonight as the winner packs their bags for Omaha.

After a lot of options, Georgia has decided to send LHP Jason Leaver (3-2) to the mound. The freshman hasn't faced the Gamecocks this season, so Perno is handing the reins to Leaver in an attempt to shock Carolina.

Meanwhile, South Carolina's pitcher was known well in advance. The Gamecocks couldn't, and wouldn't, ask for anyone other than Wynn Pelzer (5-4) to throw this super regional title game. Pelzer has the experience in pressure games to be the one guy that Ray Tanner wanted to save for their most crucial moment, which is now.

Months of hard practice, long trips, and tough schedules have brought the Bulldogs and Gamecocks to this very moment: 9 innings of baseball with the golden ticket to Rosenblatt Stadium, and a date with the Rice Owls at stake.

You can't ask for more buildup in a college baseball game. Someone from the SEC East is Omaha bound. Who will it be? We'll find out together as we are moments away from the first pitch at Foley Field in Athens!
