Athens: Wrapping the Supers Up
By - June 13, 2006
The Georgia Bulldogs aren't coming to Omaha just to show up. They overcame adversity to win this Super Regional, and given the way they played these last two games, they are a team to be reckoned with.
South Carolina just never had the pitching in the end to match Georgia's depth on the mound, and depth at the plate. Georgia made errors every now and then, but they hit the ball far too well to lose these last two. Where Carolina relied on home runs to get the win in the first game, Georgia was more impressive in the next two by hitting every type of base hit you can imagine. They blooped singles, hit line drives for doubles and triples, bunt singled, as well as knocking a home run every now and then. They stole bases when they needed to, and they just seemed to get all the breaks in momentum when they needed to.
As for this final game, I give credit to David Perno, Georgia's young but brilliant head coach. Perno knew that SC had the more impressive starting pitcher on paper in Wynn Pelzer. But Perno also knew that his Bulldogs had the pitching depth that SC didn't have. His strategy? Force Pelzer to throw as many pitches as possible. The Bulldog patience eventually paid off big. SC led 3-2 early on, and the fans in Athens were a bit worried, but Pelzer eventually wore down so much to where he self-destructed, walking in the tying run and with a wild pitch, gave Georgia a lead they'd never relinquish. On the other hand, Ray Tanner knew his pitching staff was depleted, but keeping Pelzer in for as long as he did....I'll question that move for a long time, though the Gamecocks lost anyway.
In the end, the better team won. Georgia played a smarter game, they hit better, they fielded better, and they pitched better. Most importantly, the Bulldogs simply wanted it more, and they went and got it. Now, Georgia will take on Rice in Omaha. It's too early (well, too late tonight) to really predict what to expect now, but rest assured that the Bulldogs will not go down easy, and Rice better be up for a challenge.
And with that, it's time to say goodbye to Athens and this Super Regional. It's been 3 days of great SEC baseball, and my hat goes off to Georgia, who will be the lone representative from the SEC in Omaha. It's time to get set for the College World Series....stay with CSTV.com's coverage of the Road (and the finale) in Omaha!
