Athens: Wrapping Up Day 2
By - June 11, 2006
Baseball, especially tournament baseball, is a test of adversity. Early in today's game, the Georgia Bulldogs faced tremendous adversity. After a game 1 blowout, they trailed 4-0, and things were looking bleak in Athens. But great baseball teams overcome adversity and rise to the occasion, and Georgia proved they were definitely a great baseball club with their comeback win today.
All the credit in the world to Georgia. Down 4, they rallied for 5 in the 4th, added 2 more in the 5th, and never looked back. When Carolina cut the lead to 7-5, Georgia answered right back. The Bulldogs had an answer for every Gamecock rally or run, and their answer was always better than the first attack that Carolina had.
Credit for today's win goes to Brooks Brown, who held his composure as the Gamecocks built a 4-run lead thanks to a flurry of early errors by UGA. He kept fighting, and eventually was able to shut down Carolina, and picked up a well deserved win. Credit as well goes to Jonathan Wyatt, who has played well this entire weekend, and to pretty much the entire UGA team for their hitting display. 19 hits will win you most games, and when UGA"s offense woke up in the 4th, it never shut down the rest of the way.
As for Carolina, today's loss was a stunner for them, especially because of the way it started. Georgia seemed to blow by them and USC could never recover to answer the Bulldog run. They need to stay relaxed and refocus on the task at hand. Tomorrow is do-or-die, and they can't leave anything back. It's now or never for both teams.
Who'll win tomorrow's game? It's a good question, mainly because it depends on who has the momentum. The momentum shifts in this series have been huge, vaulting the winner way ahead and never looking back. That's what Game 3 will come down to in the end: who has the last great momentum streak. Both sides need their fans to be extra loud for tomorrow's game; they need all the help they can get. It's too important to just clap politely. Yell, scream, cheer, and do what it takes for your team to get to Omaha.
Game time has been moved to 7 pm EST. So we'll see you tomorrow night from Athens, as someone will punch their ticket to Omaha!
