Atlanta: Maloney's gamble costly?

With a man on second and Vandy's two best hitters--lefties Pedro Alvarez and Ryan Flaherty--due up, Michigan Coach Rich Maloney rolled the dice with a pitching change.

With a man on second and Vandy's two best hitters--lefties Pedro Alvarez and Ryan Flaherty--due up, Michigan Coach Rich Maloney rolled the dice with a pitching change.

Maloney summoned soft-tossing lefty Ali Hussain--who'd pitched seven innings all season--from the pen. Hussen threw one ball to Pedro Alvarez and then Maloney ordered an intentional walk. But on the last pitch of the pass, Hussein threw wide of catcher Jeff Kunkel, allowing Macias to get to third as Alvarez took first.

Maloney then left Hussein to pitch to Flaherty, and with his second pitch, Hussein plunked Flaherty in the back.

DH Adam Abraham now on to pitch. Bases loaded, tie game, one out.

Now Brian Hernandez lofts a soft fly to center, Derek Van Buskirk makes what appears to be a diving catch, and Macias tagged and scored. 4-3, Commodores.
