Austin: Down Goes Texas!

By Glenn Tanner - June 04, 2006

A clutch-hitting NC State team stunned a big Austin crowd by eliminating Texas 6-3.

The Wolfpack got three hits and two RBI from DH Jon Still and a huge two-out, full-count, two-run double from #9 hitter Jonathon Diaz to break a 3-3 tie in the 8th. Diaz had been 0-for-10 in the regional.

The biggest hero for NC State, though, was pitcher Gib Hobson. Hobson started Friday’s opener, but only lasted 1.2 innings. Today, he threw a complete game, allowing only five hits and one walk.

NC State will take about an 80-minute break, then play Stanford at 4 pm. A Wolfpack win would force a winner-take-all game tomorrow at 6 pm.

Texas’ season ends shy of Omaha for the first time since 2001. Longhorn fans will ease their pain by watching their Rose Bowl DVD’s for the next couple of weeks.

Great closing line, Tanner.

Ahhhhh, I can't claim it. I heard a fan walking by me say, "Well, let's just go home and watch the Rose Bowl again."
