Austin: Longhorns Cruise, 9-1
By Glenn Tanner - June 02, 2006
Texas rode solid pitching from Kenn Kasparek and strong hitting all through the lineup to easily beat UT-Arlington 9-1.
Kasparek’s final numbers: 7.1 innings, 8 hits, 2 walks, 1 run, and 7 K’s. That’s back-to-back good starts by Kasparek, who pitched six shutout innings against Texas Tech in the Big 12 Tournament. Texas bats banged out twelve hits, with five Longhorns each getting two hits.
One of the UT traditions is for the team and crowd to sing "The Eyes of Texas" after every game. Usually, the tune is piped through the PA system. Because this is an NCAA event, the press box people aren't allowed to do that. But the crowd just stood and sang (in surprising unison) a very impressive a cappella (acapella?) rendition. Great stuff.
NC State and UT-Arlington play an elimination game tomorrow at 11 am. NC State will start Eryk McConnell (7-6, 4.20) and UTA should start lefty Dillon Gee (6-9, 5.35). NC State’s team batting average is .335 and Gee allows opponents to bat .307, so this one could get ugly.
Texas and Stanford follow at 3 pm. Stanford will start either Nolan Gallagher (4-4, 3.23) or Jeremy Bleich (4-4, 3.56). Both pitched in relief in Stanford’s 5-1 win over Texas on 2/19. Gallagher, a right-handed sophomore, pitched 2.2 innings of hitless relief and was credited with the win. Bleich, a freshman lefty, closed the game with 1.2 hitless innings and earned the save. Augie hasn’t announced his starter yet, but I’d be surprised if he didn’t start ace Kyle McCulloch. McCulloch, who struggled early in the season, started that 2/19 game and was tagged for seven hits and five runs in 4.2 innings.

Glenn, is Kenn Kasparek the 'horns #1 or #2 pitcher? Thanks -- and thanks for the blog entries! - Tony

Kasparek has been more of a midweek starter this season. They're just starting to show more confidence in him.
