Austin: Longhorns in Front Early

By Glenn Tanner - June 02, 2006

Texas leads UT-Arlington 2-1 after three innings in front of a big loud crowd.

UT-Arlington elected to pitch Kyle Gainley, who beat Texas earlier this season. It’s easy to see how this kid can baffle hitters – he’s a lefty side-armer. He looked like he still had that magic in the first inning, getting the Longhorns 1-2-3 with two backward K’s. But Texas got to him in the bottom of the 2nd, scoring twice on three hits. The inning ended when Texas tried the old First-and-Third Little League Special -- get the guy at first picked off and hope he stays in the rundown long enough for the guy on third to score. But UTA SS Kyle Rudy threw home and Chance Wheeless was called out at the plate on a very close play. Augie went ballistic on home plate umpire Harry Greer, but apparently didn't say The Magic Word.

After a 1-2-3 first that also included two strikeouts, UTA has also had success against Kenn Kasparek. The Mavericks loaded the bases in the 2nd but were unable to score. Daniel Rieder just got them on the board with a leadoff homer in the 3rd.

If there’s any program in the country the Texas Longhorns fear… wait a minute, Augie doesn’t let his players fear… Let’s just say there’s no program in the country that the Longhorns and their fans respect more than Nebraska. They’ve played 25 times since 2000, and most of the games have been intense nail-biters, with Nebraska winning 13 of them. When the National Seeds were announced, and Texas and Nebraska were matched up in the first round in Omaha should both make it that far, there was some grumbling among the fan base here. So it’s understandable that when “Final score, Manhattan 4, Nebraska 1” was announced here at Disch-Falk, there was a loud, joyous, and surprised cheer that conveyed respect, not hatred.

The temperature just passed the 90-degree mark here, but the humidity is finally a notch below 50%. I've felt much hotter.

Kyle Gainley has been "baffling" hitters for over a decade. I know...I seen it with my own two eyes as his coach for three summers in a little town called Imperial Beach, (California.) Kyle will accomplish great things...no doubt. It's no wonder with the support he gets from his family.

Keep up the great work buddy. Take care and God Bless you and your family. Maybe we'll have "a catch" some day, huh?
