Austin: Puttering Along at Disch-Falk

By Glenn Tanner - June 02, 2006

Texas has slowly and methodically stretched its lead to 6-1 after six innings.

The Longhorns got three runs in the 4th to gain some breathing room. The first run scored when the relay throw on an attempted 3-6-1 double play sailed into the dugout. Catcher Preston Clark followed a batter later with a two-run homer. That inning knocked Gainley from the game, and he was replaced on the hill by Austin Bridges, who (SURPRISE!) also happens to be a lefty side-armer. (That kind of thing never makes sense to me, but what do I know?) Texas added another run in the 5th, keyed by Drew Stubbs’ speed. Stubbs psyched Bridges into balking him to 2nd, and Carson Kainer drilled the next pitch up the middle to make it 6-1.

After giving up Daniel Rieder’s homer leading off the 3rd, Kenn Kasparek retired ten consecutive batters. The Mavs broke that streak with a double and a single, but then gave him some help – with runners on 1st and 3rd with two outs and UTA’s best hitter at the plate, Clark picked off the runner at first.

Another big cheer just went up when a score was announced, as there are obviously lots of Prairie View fans in attendance today.

Kasparek is pitching pretty well so far, allowing only five hits and two walks while striking out five. However, the pace of this game the last few innings is slower than the traffic I can see crawling along I-35 past the LF fence. Have I mentioned that there are 40,000 motorcycles in town for the weekend?

The bikers are probably the only reason I don't regret that we were not able to be in Austin for the Regionals. And that lowered section of I-35 just magnifies the racket!!!

Yeah, I can honestly hear the Harleys on the highway from the press box!
