Austin: Stanford Advances

By Glenn Tanner - June 04, 2006

Stanford pounded eight NC State pitchers for 24 hits, winning 17-7. The Cardinal are Austin Regional champs and will play the winner of the Corvallis Regional next weekend.

Stanford scored in every inning except the 4th today. Chris Minaker and Michael were a complete wrecking crew. Minaker went 5-for-5 with a walk and scored six runs. Taylor went 4-for-6 with 5 RBI.

The Stanford bats simply dominated this regional: 7 runs on 14 hits on Friday, 12 runs on 16 hits yesterday, and 17 runs on 24 hits today. When you get hitting like that, you don’t need much pitching, but the Cardinal also got good starts from Greg Reynolds and Nolan Gallagher.

The All-Regional Team:
P Greg Reynolds, Stanford
P Gib Hobson, NC State
C John Hester, Stanford
1B Aaron Bates, NC State
2B Chris Lewis, Stanford
SS Chris Minaker, Stanford
3B Randy Molina, Stanford
OF Michael Taylor, Stanford
OF Matt Camp, NC State
OF Carson Kainer, Texas
DH Jon Still, NC State

Most Outstanding Player – Minaker

Stanford earns a rematch against (most likely) Oregon State in the Supers, and I’m sure they’re looking forward to it. The Beavers embarrassed Stanford in a three game sweep in Corvallis in mid-April, winning 3-0, 1-0, and run-ruling the Cardinal in the finale 12-1. If they bring the bats they used this weekend, I can guarantee you they’ll score more runs this time.

Congrats to the Cardinal, they're complete class. Every one of their players seems to be both extremely intelligent and extremely polite, and we saw Mark Marquess' class yesterday when he was the first person to reach Texas' Nick Peoples after he was hit in the face by a ball.

I've had a great time this weekend. Thanks to CSTV's Dan Kaufman for allowing to do this and coordinating the Touching the Bases project.
