Austin: Stanford Makes It Look Easy
By Glenn Tanner - June 02, 2006
Stanford dominated today’s first game, beating NC State 7-2. Stanford will play again at 3 pm tomorrow, while the Wolfpack will play an 11 am elimination game.
The Cardinal out-hit the Wolfpack 14-7, and Greg Reynolds threw another complete game. Reynolds struck out seven and helped himself with his glove, starting two 1-6-3 double plays and ending with four assists overall. Wolfpack starter Gib Hobson didn’t make it out of the 2nd inning, and NC State used six relievers.
Texas hosts UT-Arlington in the next game at 3 pm. UT-Arlington is a frequent mid-week visitor to Disch-Falk Field. Since first meeting in 1981, the teams have played 65 times with the Longhorns winning 50, including victories in the 1990 and 1992 Austin regionals. This season, however, the Mavericks won the only meeting, 6-3 on April 11th. A couple of freshmen started on the mound that day. In his only start of the year, Joey Parigi got touched for five 2nd-inning runs, while Mavs’ starter Kyle Gainley pitched six innings and allowed only one earned run. Kenn Kasparek is expected to start for the Longhorns today, to be opposed by either Gainley or Dillon Gee.
Do you enjoy cognitive dissonance? Try this one on for size… You always hear baseball coaches (particularly Augie Garrido) talk about the importance of scoring first. This season, Texas is 23-12 when scoring first, and 17-7 when their opponent scores first. For those of you that aren’t math whizzes, that’s a 66% winning percentage when they score the crucial first run, and 71% winning percentage when they don’t.
