Chapel Hill: Cox Leads Carolina Hit Parade

By Bryan Graham - June 02, 2006

With a two-RBI double that opened an 11-6 lead for the Tar Heels in the bottom of the seventh, North Carolina designated hitter Jay Cox improved to 3-for-3 on the afternoon with three runs scored and five RBIs.

And the it wouldn't end there.

The Bears would bat around in the inning, sending 11 hitters to the plate. The final tally wasn't pretty: Seven runs, four base hits (including two doubles), two bases on balls and two hit batsmen. When the dust cleared, the Heels held a 15-6 lead -- thanks to 11 unanswered runs -- and memories of Maine's momentum-wresting power plays had all but disappeared.

Carolina's 15 runs matches a program record for runs scored in a single NCAA Tournament game.
