Chapel Hill: Start The Bus

By Bryan Graham - June 04, 2006

In one of those sucker-punch-to-the-gut, come-from-ahead defeats that supporters of the Seahawks won't soon forget, Winthrop fireballer Heath Rollins ended UNC Wilmington's season in the bottom of the ninth.

The Big South Pitcher of the Year completed his second inning of a rare relief appearance, surrendering two base hits before retiring the final three batters in succession to eliminate the Seahawks from the Chapel Hill regional.

The Eagles had rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth to take their first lead of the contest. UNCW's Chris Hatcher led off the Seahawks ninth with a bunt single and Jason Appel slammed a double to rightfield that got the Wilmington fans buzzing -- but Matt Poulk fanned swinging, John Raynor popped out and Johnathan Batts grounded out to end the season for the Colonial Athletic Association champs.

Winthrop and host North Carolina are due to start at 5:00 p.m. ET. Worth mentioning that clouds have moved over the Bosh and it's looking like rain.
