Charlottesville: Arms Race
By Elliot Olshansky - June 04, 2006
We're about 10 minutes away from South Carolina and Evansville, as the Purple Aces look to survive the night and force a winner-take-all game on Monday.
Forrest Beverly will be on the hill for the Gamecocks, bringing a 5.55 ERA and .286 opponent batting average into the game. He's 6-2 in 15 appearances (12 starts) this season. If the Gamecocks are vulnerable on the mound, we're about to find out.
Meanwhile, Evansville will send senior Mitch Prout to the mound. Prout has made 13 appearances this season (four starts), and is 1-1 with a 4.18 ERA and .262 opponent batting average.
While we're waiting for this one to get going, I'll answer a couple of questions that have been posted, as best I can.
First, to Mr. D.J. Brooks, who wants to know if Florida State would host a Super Regional if they win the Athens Regional. The honest answer is, "I don't know." I'd imagine that if Evansville wins it, then FSU would host them in that matchup. Meanwhile, if it were South Carolina against the Seminoles, my gut says that the Gamecocks would host, since their being sent to Charlottesville and FSU to Athens suggests that the Gamecocks are a higher-regarded 2-seed than the Seminoles.
Of course, I could be totally off with that, and for a more educated and definitive word, you'd be best off asking my pal Eric Sorenson. Eric, your thoughts?
Second, to "Brooks" - is that you again, D.J. - who wants to know how UVa got to host a regional, in light of their uninspiring performance this weekend. Well, Brian O'Connor said in the postgame press conference that his starting pitchers did not perform this weekend as they had during the regular season. When you look at what they accomplished up to this point, you see 46 wins and a team that's certainly worthy to host a regional.
They'll be here again, too. Consider that Doolittle, the ACC Player of the Year, will be back again next season, and the Hoos started true freshmen at second, third, and short, and you realize that we haven't heard the last of these Cavaliers. They'll certainly be a team worth watching next season.
But the teams to watch now are South Carolina and Evansville, so let's play some ball.
