Charlottesville: Back At It

By Elliot Olshansky - June 03, 2006

We're about 15 minutes away from getting back at it with Lehigh and Evansville in an elimination game, and I thought I'd share a few sights, sounds, and tastes from around Davenport Field.

I made my way down to the interview room, and saw that the Aces had gone right to the table. Not much time for lunch when you have to turn around and play in about an hour and a half.

Inside the interview room, head coach Dave Schrage was on his own for the press conference, and made a very important point: you can't give a team like South Carolina extra outs and unearned runs and expect to win. The Aces did so, which is why they're about to play an elimination game.

Of course, Schrage didn't have the same press conference issues that Lehigh and Virginia did last night. The power outage that I blogged about left the interview room unusable, so we relocated back to the press box, where the postgmae presser was lit by the emergency lighting.

Speaking of Lehigh, they, by virtue of their lower seed, are the road team for this one, so the Purple Aces need to go to their home whites, which they were doing when I left the interview room.

As for the Gamecocks, they have their work cut out for them, since ACC Player of the Year Sean Doolittle will be on the hill for the Cavaliers in the nightcap. Ray Tanner is feeling ill, but coached the game. Still, associate head coach Jim Toman took his spot in the press conference alongside Justin Smoak and Mike Cisco.

Meanwhile, lunch is served in the press box: barbecue (that'd be "pulled pork" to my fellow northerners). Thankfully, I didn't stick out like a sore thumb - at least not at the table - because I know how to eat my barbecue (tip for the uninitiated: the coleslaw goes on the sandwich).

Alright...the infield dirt has been watered down, so let's get this thing going!
