Charlottesville: Getting Their Phil

By Elliot Olshansky - June 05, 2006

The All-Regional team was just announced, and indeed, Phil Disher is your Most Outstanding Player. He's joined on the All-Regional team by fellow Gamecocks Wynn Pelzer, Mike Cisco, Chris Brown, and Neil Giesler. Matt McBride from Lehigh is the All-Regional catcher, and UVa puts two players on the team in first baseman Sean Doolittle and outfielder Brandon Guyer. Evansville has three representatives on the team: Kern Watts, Jim Viscomi, and Robbie Minor.

Not identical to my ballot, but it's hard to argue against these picks.

I do think the NCAA should make the infield spots general, rather than stipulating that there must be one player at each infield position. None of the second basemen in this tournament were particularly outstanding - although Brown impressed me in the field - and Justin Smoak had a very nice regional at first base, and was left on the outside looking in (not that he cares too much right now) because Doolittle hit .750 and slugged 1.250. Smoak was more deserving than Brown, but not more than Doolittle. Oh well. Doolittle's season is over, and Smoak will be playing next weekend, and they'll both tell you that that's what matters.
