Charlottesville: It's Ain't Pretty

By Elliot Olshansky - June 04, 2006

It's Pitcher No. 3 for Virginia, as Andrew Carraway takes the mound in the fifth, and Beau Seabury botches another throw to second, allowing Jeff Zelenovich to steal. There's plenty of time, but Virginia just isn't looking like a team that's going to use that time to do something.

If yesteday's action was an exhibition in the little things teams do to win games, this contest is turning into in exhibition in how talented teams lose games. The Cavaliers have stranded a runner in scoring position in each of the last two innings, including Tim Hagan in the 4th after a leadoff triple to third. They're failing to throw Purple Aces out on the basepaths. It just isn't pretty.

And now, Casey Lambert is on the mound for the Hoos. Depending on how you look at it, Virginia is either in Survival Mode - "We'll use everyone we have to to get to tonight" - or Concession Mode - "We're done, so let's get everyone some time in the NCAA Tournament."

Oh, and chalk up two more runs for the Aces, as Viscomi runs the squeeze play, and Jeremy Farrell's throw home misses, allowing both Kyle Smith and Zelenovich to steal.

Anything can happen, but Virginia doesn't look like a team that'll make anything happen.
