Charlottesville: Lead Er-Aced

By Elliot Olshansky - June 04, 2006

It's a 6-3 ballgame at Davenport, as the Evansville bats are getting to Mr. Beverly.

Of course, it also doesn't hurt that the Gamecocks have had some very shoddy field work as well, with two errors in the inning.

The first run scored on what might have been a double-play ball from Viscomi - it dropped weakly in front of the plate, but Trent Kline's throw to second went into the outfield, allowing Kyle Smith to score. Kern Watts and Kasey Wahl followed with RBI singles. Kirk Bascu drew a walk to load the bases, and then Beverly couldn't his glove on a weak comebacker from Pat Tumilty, allowing Watts to score. A Robbie Minor single brought home Bascu and Wahl, and that'll do it for Mr. Beverly.

Jeff Jeffords is in for the Gamecocks, and he gets his first batter out, but then hits Kyle Smith. It looks like the Gamecocks' pitching problems may be coming back to haunt them. However, there's still lots of baseball to be played, and we just saw how quickly a three-run lead can evaporate.
