Charlottesville: One More Time

By Elliot Olshansky - June 05, 2006

Good evening from Davenport Field in Charlottesville, as we get set for the seventh and final game of this regional, as the Evansville Purple Aces take on the Gamecocks from the University of South Carolina.

We've got a bit of early confusion here in Virginia, as the Aces are wearing their purple road unis, and the Gamecocks are in their home whites, but Evansville is the home team again.

I've been informed that this is because South Carolina has only been the visitor once in this regional, which takes priority about the rule I was quoted earlier about not being the home team twice in a row. Either way, I still think it's a stupid and arbitrary way to decide this thing, and they should just make the higher seed the home team and be done with it. You play all year to get a good seed, it ought to mean something.

But enough of that. It's time to play some baseball. Kai Tuomi is the starter for the Purple Aces, with a 6-1 record, a 3.61 ERA, and an opponent batting average of .298. Last time out, he picked up the win in the MVC title game, going 6.2 innings and giving up six hits, a walk, and one earned run in a 2-1 win for the Aces.

He'll be opposed by Wynn Pelzer of the Gamecocks, who comes in with a 4-4 record, a 3.99 ERA, and a .217 opponent batting average.

Alright, let's play ball!
