Charlottesville: Rain, Rain, Go Away
By Elliot Olshansky - June 02, 2006
We're having some nasty weather in Charlottesville...it'll be at least a half hour before we're allowed outside, let alone before anyone starts playing any baseball. The only thing "Touching the Bases" right now is a tarp!
I got here a little over an hour ago, and was told that there would be a delay because of storms in the area (there was no rain yet). I pulled out my camera to take some pictures before realizing that the batteries were out of power. I ducked into a nearby building to charge up, and was fortunate enough to be inside before the skies opened up above us.
In wandering around what I eventually learned to be Onesty Hall, I stumbled into the room where the Mountain Hawks from Lehigh were waiting for the rain to stop. Overall, they seemed pretty loose: a few guys were in a circle playing two-ball, a couple of guys were making and eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and there were a few guys just laid out on a crash mat, listening to their iPods or just taking a nap.

I had a chance to talk to Lehigh third baseman Matt Geiger - who resembles the former NBA center of same name only in choice of hairstyle - about rain delays, and how the team relaxes during them. Once I get my wireless up and running - I'm typing this from the UVA Athletic Communications Office - I'll post the interview and you can give it a listen. Until then, stay dry.
