Clemson: Looking at the other brackets
By Craig Jackson - June 04, 2006
Ok. It's Championship Sunday at 16 regional sites around the country. Let's take a look and see how things are going so far.
Clemson Regional
Clemson marching on through. MSU or Elon left to do battle with the Clemson for the right to move on. Right now, Clemson has to be the favorite.
Fayetteville Regional
Oral Roberts? Yes Oral Roberts is in he championship game. They beat Arkansas AND Oklahoma State, and one of those teams will have to beat Oral ROberts 2 times to advance to play the Clemson Regional winner. Care to predict this one?
Atlanta Regional
Two Words: Ramblin' Wreck. They got past the Stetson factor, and handled Vandy. Now they are in the finals, and wait for either Vandy or Michigan. Tim Corbin will have his guys ready, but can they come back after a long run in the SEC Tournament? We shall see.
Lexington Regional
College of Charleston. Are you begining to see a trend here? Kentucky and Ball State play early for the right to challenge C of C fcr the championship. Should be an interesting afternoon in Lexington.
Tuscaloosa Regional
The SEC has their first participant in a regional final. This sounds like it was a pretty good regional. Winner of the Southern Miss/Troy matchup has the ability to challenge Bama for the title. But will it be enough? Read Mark's Blog to find out.
Chapel Hill Regional
One thing is for certain in this regional: the fans are getting their monies worth offensively. THis regional has seen scores of 14, 15, 14, and my favorite UNCW 21, Maine 19 (Ran out of time trying to get that last FG) UNC is averaging 14.5 runs per game, and only gvivng up slightly more than 5. Whoever is left from Winthrop. UNCW will most likely be a scarificial lamb.
Fullerton Regional
Gong about like expected. Fullerton will play either San Diego or Fresno State. San Diego has scored 27 runs in their first 2 games. Can they keep it up?
Malibu Regional
Again, no surprise here. Pepperdine is in the finals waiting on either UCLA or Missouri.
Austin Regional
Funny thing happened on Texas' way back to Omaha. Stanford. Yes the same team that was a bubble team to even get in. They have to lose two to either NC State or Texas. An uphill battle for either team.
Corvallis Regional
The Beavers are Back in the finals to face either Kansas or Hawaii. Advantage Oregon State
Lincoln Regional
Big Red goes two and out. Miami is in the finals, and who would have expected the Jaspers and the Dons in a "I'm going to the finals" game. Either way, college baseball has seen to "mid majors" hang with the big dogs of the regional. Is Miami scared? WHo knows. Should they be? Probably. Check back later today to see what happenes.
Oxford Regional
Sleepwalking thru the first two games has not hurt the Rebels as they head to the finals today. Tulane or South Alabama will provide the late day competition. Can the Rebels win and go to a superregional 2 years in a row?
Houston REgional
THey are not quite to Chapionship Sunday due to rain. Rice is playing Baylor with the loser paying an elemination game later today. Chapionship Monday is what they will play in Texas. We will find out later today who will be playing in it.
Norman Regional
Another one of those Who'd a thunk it regionals. Wichita State is in the finals. Houston is gone. Oklahoma or TCU will fill the other half of the bracket. Wichita is another of those teams not expected to even make the tourney, yet here they are on the cusp of another trip to Omaha. This should be an interesting final, especially if Oklahoma is there.
Athens Regional
Florida State has made a statement this weekend. Travelling because of a late season slump, questioned by some pundits, the Seminoles are in the finals, and Georgia or Jacksonville. Yes, he same Jacksonville that got pummeled 18-0 by FSU. Georgia was a national seed, and are in danger of losing that seed.
Charlottesville REgional
SEC Suprise team South Carolina has found itself in the hunt for Omaha with a trip to the regioan Fials on Saturday night. UVa has to beat Evansville for the right to play USC twice and a trip to possibly Dick Howser Stadium.
So as you can see, the best laid plans of mice and men oft times go astray. By 10 PM tonight, we should have most of the surprise in, and see what next week will be like.

Craig,
Are you kidding me? You are referring to The Oregon State Beavers as the "Quack Attack"....which is located down the road in Eugene...called the Oregon Ducks!! They don't even have a baseball team!!! Have you ever been to Corvallis?....or Oregon for that matter?

You have 11 sports writers covering 11 of the 16 regionals and not one west of Nebraska!!! Hate to keep beating this East Coast Biased thing to death but...we do play baseball out west too!

Chris - we are unhappy about the West Coast coverage, but trying to put together 16 writers in 3 days exposed some holes - especially with Eric Sorenson being borrowed by CSTV's TV side instead of heading to Malibu and Fullerton. But we're pretty happy about this unprecedented coverage - and hoping to do better next weekend.

I'm a pretty staunch SEC guy, but Chris Swanson does raise a good point: Was there a blanket decision not to cover the western regionals? Did that fellow named Gus who was originally listed as the Malibu slogger just not pan out? Is CSTV just reflecting what interests its audience, and is that audience mostly in the Southeast?

Phil
As I wrote to Chris, the decision on where we had coverage was based on where we could get people in the short time we had to line them up. There were connectivity issues in Malibu that affected us as well.
But given the national scope of the tournament - Glenn Tanner has coverage of Stanford in Austin, Doug Kroll is on the USF story in Lincoln - I hope that we get credit for trying something that has never been done before, even while we recognize where we can be more complete.
Thanks,
Dan

Absolutely, Dan. This blog has been great! I love the feeling of a national multi-site tournament like this one, and your blog really gives a feel for that.
I think my post crossed with your reply to Chris, which made it look like I was piling on. Thanks for the explanation and for your direct interaction with fans.
