Clemson: Tigers rallying

By Chris Lee - June 10, 2006

Sometimes, it's the inability to do the really, really small things that cost teams baseball games, and one of those circumstances may wind up costing ORU dearly.

With two outs and Herman Demmink on first, Clemson's Tyler Colvin hit a high chopper to second baseman Jake Kahaulelia. Instead of charging the ball stlghtly, Kahaulelia waited back, fielded, and threw to first, but by that time the speedy Colvin legged out a hit.

The next hitter, Taylor Harbin, then singled off the glove of pitcher Erik Crichton into center to plate Demmink from second, and cut the lead to 5-4.

Andy D'Alessio then walked, and Stan Widman added a single over short to plate two more.

In fairness to Kahaulelia, it would have been tough to charge the ball and make a play, and I'm not 100% certain it could have been done. I didn't have benefit of a replay, and to hold him accountable may be completely unfair.

But as with any split-second play, you wonder what might have been, and if I'm right, ORU would have been out of the inning with a 5-3 lead. Instead, Clemson now leads 6-5 and is still hitting as ORU makes a pitching change.
