Fayetteville: An emotional goodbye for Tigers

By - June 03, 2006

Princeton is out of the NCAA Tournament, but they bowed out with the class that is expected from the prestigious Ivy League school...

"We played well", said Princeton Coach Scott Bradley. "I'm proud of these guys".

Christian Staehely, the losing pitcher who threw 7 innings of no-hit baseball, was gracious in defeat, but very emotional. During the press conference, Staehely had to stop in mid-sentence, as the tears flowed down his face.

There were some bright moments for the Tigers though, who played with a tenacity that demanded respect from the major baseball powers they faced. Erik Stiller and Christian Staehely were tremendous on the mound, and Spencer Lucian called his 2-run homer today "The greatest baseball moment of my life".

Staehely admitted the crowd of over 5,900 got to him in the 8th.

"It was a 3-2 count to their first guy, and right in mid-pitch, my mechanics got all messed up," Staehely said. "Right then, I thought 'No, not now. This can't happen now.' But it did".

Staehely was asked about the pitch he threw to James Ewing that led to the 3-run double.

"That pitch, regrettably, was a hanging splitter," he said.

Princeton players, coaches and fans alike raved about the facilites and the crowds this weekend in Fayetteville.

"You know, playing in this facility, in front of 7,000 fans, that's our dream," Bradley said. "This is what we play for. This is our 5th time in a regional since I've been here. I hope we come back."

Mark my words, the Tigers will definitely be back, and soon.
