Fayetteville: The Calm Before The Storm
By - June 02, 2006
It's a warm, beautiful morning in Fayetteville, and as we speak, the U of A groundskeepers are hard at work. They're putting on the last touches to Baum Stadium before Oklahoma State and Princeton square off at 2 pm Central.
Just so you get a feel of the stadium right now, I'm writing to you from the Norm DeBriyn Concourse inside the stadium. All the chairback seats sit below the concourse, which makes it easy for fans to go pick up concesssions and still be able to watch the action. The concourse is loaded with concessions, novelty stores, food vendors selling everything from pretzels to frozen pink lemonade, and of course, plenty of restrooms. Outside the concourse (which basically covers all infield seating), large tents selling pizza, hot dogs, and funnel cakes line left field in a carnival setting. On the right field side, a huge grill, shaped in the form of a razorback, rests quietly, soon to be crowded with people lined up for burgers, chicken, and just about anything else you can stick on a grill.
Normally, there are two sets of bleachers placed on the left and right field sides above the chairback seating, so that Baum can seat 8,000-9,000 fans. However, more seats had to be added to both sides, along with bleachers in left center field, to make room for the expected crowds of 10,000 for tonight's Arkansas-Oral Roberts matchup. Bleachers have even been set in the Hog Pen, a grassy knoll in left field that generally serves as a picnic area for fans. Baseball fever has definitely gripped Fayetteville.
As for me, I'll be seated on top of one of several raised platforms inside the concourse, directly behind the chairback seats so that traffic doesn't get in my way. The media coverage is so extensive that the press box could only seat the reporters who follow the Razorbacks on a day-to-day basis, and even some of them will be joining me on the platforms tonight. It's better though to be down with the fans in my opinion, as you can get the a taste of the real atmosphere tonight.
Game time is set for 2 pm, with Oklahoma State taking on Princeton, and then Arkansas takes on Oral Roberts at 7. It's time to let the experts finish up here...so more to come later.
