Game One Thoughts

What a day at the ballpark so far. The guys and I arrived at 10, Slipp dropped in on his way to the Georgia Tech regional, and oh yeah, a baseball game broke out! By noon, the grills were smoking, the tales were being told, and plans were being made for the tournament. The threat of rain was nearly non existent until just about game time, and then it lightninged once, thundered twice, and passed on by.

Elon has come out and played inspired ball. after feeling each other out in the first inning, MSU got one in the top of the second, and Elon got 4 in the bottom of the second. Scary moment in the top of the second when the shortstop, second baseman, and centerfeilder for Elon all went aftger a pop foul in dead man's land. The three collided and the shortstop wound up on the ground in a daze, shaken, not hurt.

It is a hot and humid day at Clemson, and the afternoon still holds a threat of rain. The crowds have been nice sized and loud. Lot more orange and purple than anything else.

An interesting piece of trivia: two teams in this regional wear white cleats. Both Clemson and Elon wear the white cleats made famous in the 70's by the Oakland Athletics.

Both teams continue to do battle between the lines. Elon jumped to a big 4-1 lead in the second, only to have State storm back in the fifth to tie and retire Elon. Both starters remain in the game, although growing pitch counts and the hot humid day may take it's toll on either one before very much longer.

Regional watching is full swing. A few remarks of surprise to hear Notre Dame tied after 10, and Manhattan leading Nebraska after 8. Sounds like someone tinkered with a rotation in order to get a favorable match up iin a potential game against Miami. Wonder what the regional shakeout at the end of the day will look like.
