Houston: Baylor Breaks Through

By Jeremy Mills - June 05, 2006

After retiring six straight hitters, Joe Savery struggled in the third as Baylor scored three runs with two outs to take a 3-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings.

The trouble started with a one-out hit batter in the top of the third. Kevin Russo followed up with a single to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. After Seth Fortenberry struck out, Savery got ahead of Beamer Weems with two strikes. The Baylor shortstop eventually coaxed a walk to load the bases, and after a visit to the mound by Wayne Graham the Bears scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch. Zach Dillon knocked the next pitch through the right side of the infield to score two more runs, giving the Bears a 3-0 lead with the Owls coming up in the bottom of the third.

Some outstanding defense kept Rice off the board in the second inning. Jordan Dodson reached on a one-out single to centerfield, but a running catch by Seth Fortenberry in the leftfield gap kept him from advancing on Danny Lehmann's blast. He was subsequently picked off first by Tim Matthews to retire the side.

Tyler Henley has two hits in as many at bats for the Owls, and currently stands at first with one out in the bottom of the third.
