Houston: Bears Take Opener Against Sun Devils
By Jeremy Mills - June 03, 2006
For most of the game, the largest cheers from the Baylor faithful came as the Nebraska and Texas losses were announced. When the ninth inning rolled around, the cheers were for their team as Ryan LaMotta held off a late rally to send the Bears into the winners' bracket with a 3-2 win over Arizona State.
Ryan LaMotta didn't start the game for Baylor, but he was the only pitcher that the Bears needed after the game was resumed on Saturday. Steve Smith was about to take him out with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth, but he only made it three steps out of the first base dugout before being motioned back by the righty. The coach's faith in his pitcher was rewarded, as the Sun Devils were retired on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Sontag and a game-ending strikeout of Willy Fox. LaMotta improves to 7-6 on the season after his 140 pitch outing, where he struck out a career high eight batters.
Arizona State pitched by committee after the resumption, as four Sun Devil pitchers combined to allow seven hits and three runs on the game. Josh Satow allowed all three runs, and drops to 4-2 with the loss. Daryl Arreola, Brett Bordes and Brady Martinez combined for 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, keeping ASU in the game to set the stage for their ninth inning rally.
After Kevin Russo made a great play at second to get the first out in the ninth, Preston Paramore singled up the middle to bring Coach Smith to the mound for a visit. When play resumed, pinch hitter CJ Retherford singled up the middle on the first pitch to put the tying run on base. Seth Dhaenens grounded to third on what could have been a game-ending double play, but Drew Bias' throw pulled Russo off the base at second to load the bases and bring the Sun Devils to their feet for the first time in five innings. After Steve Smith's aborted visit to the mound, Ryan Sontag hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Paramore and cut the deficit to 3-2. LaMotta responded by throwing four nasty sliders to Eric Sogard, getting him to strike out swinging to end the contest.
With the victory, Baylor (36-24) will play RIce in tomorrow afternoon's winners' bracket contest at 1:00 PM. Arizona State (36-20) gets an hour off before battling Prairie View in this evening's losers' bracket contest (first pitch scheduled for 8:05)
