Houston: Consolidating Their Gains
By Jeremy Mills - June 04, 2006
Eddie Degerman struck out the side in the bottom of the first inning, and the Owls added another run in the top of the second to take a 4-0 lead over Baylor after two innings.
Degerman needed just ten pitches to record three strikeouts in his first trip to the mound on Sunday. Kevin Russo, Seth Fortenberry and Zach Dillon each struck out swinging for the Bears. I don't think official stats are kept on this, but Eddie has to lead the nation in the "strikeout swinging, out at first C-1B" category. Two of his whiffs required a throw to first to complete, and it seems like about a third of his strikeouts are in this fashion. That's what a devastating curve will do!
In the top of the second, Jordan Dodson started things off by singling to center before moving to second and Kenny Ford's sacrifice. Tyler Henley singled to right, and Dodson scored without a throw to run the lead to four.
After spending most of Friday's game on their hands, the Rice fans have been on their feet and loud since the opening pitch. We're pretty close to a full house today, as Baylor's proximity to Houston has resulted in a large contingent of gold-clad fans. The weather's warm and sticky, but the crowd has been anything but lethargic.
Degerman was just as dominant in the bottom of the second, striking out two batters and inducing a weak grounder to short as the side was retired in order. It's seems like he's found his release point after walking a career high seven batters in his last start.
