Houston: Crowd Roars Twice

By Jeremy Mills - June 04, 2006

Baylor broke up Degerman's no-hitter in the bottom of the fifth, but a 2-6-2 double play ended the inning to bring the Owl crowd to their feet. Before they had settled down, both side roared as the final was announced from Austin, where the Longhorns were eliminated. Through 5 innings, Rice still leads 4-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Baylor had runners on the corners with one out. Tim Jackson singled up the middle to break up the no-hitter and moved to second on a two-strike sacrifice by Matt Sodolak. Drew Bias singled to right, setting the stage for the top of the Bear order.

The squeeze was on, and Kevin Russo put the ball down right atop home plate. The home plate umpire ruled the ball fair, but Bias didn't break from first so Lehmann threw to Friday for the easy out at second. Friday quickly threw back home, where Lehmann tagged out Tim Jackson to end the inning. The Rice fans roared to their feet as the Owls erupted from the dugout. Just like that, the momentum shifted back in the favor of the hosts.
