Houston: Owls Add Insurance in Seventh

By Jeremy Mills - June 04, 2006

When these teams met in April, Nick Cassavechia gave up the game-winning 3-run homer to Josh Rodriguez. When Rodriguez came up with two runners on and Cassavechia atop the mound, the first pitch was up and in and loaded the bases after it hit Rodriguez. Three unearned runs later and the Owls were on top 7-2 after 7 1/2 innings.

The Owl rallied with one out in the seventh. Tyler Henley walked and was safe at second after an error by Beamer Weems on a Greg Buchanan grounder. Henley scored the first run of the inning on a Brian Friday single, and the bases were loaded after Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. Joe Savery drove in the second run of an inning on a sacrifice fly to left, and Friday rounded out the scoring after Aaron Luna was hit by a pitch and Danny Lehmann walked. Jake Weghorst came in to relieve for the Bears, and has recorded four outs on nine pitches (all strikes) since entering the contest.

Eddie Degerman remains in the game, and has matched his season high with eleven strikeouts through seven innings. The old adage is to get to a starting pitcher early -- Degerman usually dominates the first time through the order due to his unorthodox delivery, but usually struggles for an inning or two later. Baylor had their chances in the fourth and fifth, but only managed to plate two unearned runs during the time. Since then, he's been back at the top of his game and the window of opportunity is closing for the Bears.
