Houston: Owls Down Bears 7-4 to Advance to Supers
By Jeremy Mills - June 05, 2006
For the sixth time in the last eight years, Rice advanced to the super regionals with a 7-4 victory over Baylor in the championship game of the Houston Regional. The Owls will play the winner of tonight's Oklahoma-Wichita State finale at the Norman Regional.
Joe Savery (5-1) won his first game since March 26th and Cole St. Clair saved his eleventh game of the season to help Rice get it "Done in One" on Monday afternoon. Tyler Henley went 4-for-5 on the game, helping pace the Rice attack that bombarded Tim Matthews (6-5) for ten hits in the first three innings. Jake Weghorst held the Owls scoreless over the final three innings, but an early 7-3 lead was too much to overcome.
Zach Dillon was the offensive star for the Bears, driving in two of the three runs in the third inning.
The two teams combined for nine of the eleven members of the all-tournament team. Eddie Degerman was named the regional's Most Outstanding Player as the Owl ace struck out fourteen Baylor batters on Sunday.
Rice's pitching staff finished the regional with 42 strikeouts -- 15 against Prairie View on Friday, 17 against Baylor yesterday and 10 in this afternoon's contest. While their scoreless inning streak ended in today's game, the Owl bullpen allowed just one run over 10 2/3 innings this weekend.
Rice improves to 53-10 on the season, boasting the highest win total and lowest number of losses of any Division I school in the country. The Owls will host next weekend's super regional at Reckling Park, where they boast a 32-5 record this season. Baylor finishes the season at 37-26 but were just 10-19 away from Baylor Ballpark.

Hey Jeremy,
I count 6/8 for Rice trips to Supers since the tourney went to this format in '99 ('99vCajuns, '01vHuskers, '02vTigers, '03vCougars, '05vWave, '06v?).
Great reporting this week, and your website is great.

You are correct -- when I wrote the recap, I forgot to include 2005 since both rounds were on the road. I've updated the text to reflect that.
