Houston: Owls Soar Into Championship Game
By Jeremy Mills - June 04, 2006
Rice scored four early runs to take control of Sunday's winners' bracket contest, downing the Baylor Bears 7-2 on Sunday afternoon. Baylor (36-25) plays again in an hour in a losers' bracket battle against Arizona State (37-20), while Rice (52-10) advances to the championship game tomorrow afternoon.
Eddie Degerman struck out a season-high fourteen batters, and Cole St. Clair struck out the side in the ninth around one walk as the Owls shut down Baylor over the final five innings to secure the victory. Degerman's record improves to 12-1 on the season, while Randall Linebaugh lost his first game of the season to fall to 6-1.
The Rice bullpen has been the strength of the team lately, but with Degerman's strong start they were largely uncalled upon today. With St. Clair's scoreless ninth, the Owl bullpen hasn't yielded a run in 26 2/3 innings over the last three weeks. Tyler Henley sparked the lineup from the leadoff spot, reaching base four times and scoring two runs. Six different batters drove in runs, led by Joe Savery's two RBI.
Steve Smith cleared the Baylor bench late in the contest, as fifteen different position players participated in the contest. He probably regretted the decision in the eighth, as backup catcher came up with the bases loaded in a spot where leading hitter Zach Dillon would have hit earlier in the contest. The only Baylor hitter with more than one hit was #9 hitter Drew Bias.
There was a moment of levity from our home plate umpire in the bottom of the ninth. After Seth Hammock fouled two pitches off the umpire, he looked to the skies with a "Why Me?" expression.
