Houston: So You Think You Can Dance?
By Jeremy Mills - June 03, 2006
Michael Richard opened the contest with a back-flip as the Panthers took the field for the top of the first. Not to be outdone, fellow shortstop Andrew Romine followed suit as the Sun Devils took the field for the bottom of the inning. Prairie View fans haven't had much to cheer about since then, as Arizona State leads 10-0 as we head to the bottom of the third.
Since our dance-off to start the game, both groups of fans have been fairly subdued. Arizona State's crowd seems worn down from the tense afternoon battle against Baylor, while Prairie View fans just haven't had much to cheer about.
The Panther defense started the game strong, as second baseman Paul Johnson made two excellent plays to start the inning and first baseman Rashard Shorter speared a liner to end the inning. Michael Richard singled with two outs in the bottom of the frame for Prairie View, but was thrown out trying to steal to end the inning. Then, the floodgates opened for the Sun Devil offense.
Arizona State scored five times in the top of the second, as the offense accumulated five hits (two on bunts) to put the Panthers on their heels early. The first five batters of the inning all reached base and eventually scored, and Prairie View was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning. Johnny Giles singled with one out, and after Paul Johnson struck out Eugene Edwards grounded up the middle. Andrew Romine made a great play at short, and threw Giles out at third after Edwards reached on an infield single.
The Sun Devil offense and Prairie View defense combined to extend the lead in the third inning. And to make sure the scoresheet was complete, there was a balk in the inning as well. The final damage was five runs on five hits with three Panther errors. End result, a 10-0 lead for Arizona State and a carriage quickly turned pumpkin for the Prairie View Panthers.
