Houston: Speed and Strikeouts
By Jeremy Mills - June 02, 2006
It's the top of the third in Houston, and #2 Rice is currently trailing 5-1 (with the Panthers still threatening). Five Prairie View batters have struck out, but when they've gotten on base they've been running -- three different runners have stolen four bases.
Rice scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second. Joe Savery and Aaron Luna hit singles to lead off the inning, and were sacrificed up a base by Adam Zornes. Savery scored on a Jordan Dodson single, but Wrandal Taylor was able to get out of the inning with a caught stealing and groundout.
The Panthers have certainly been fun to watch. Calvin Taylor reached on an infield single in the first, then stole two bases (#55 and 56 of the season) to move over to third, where he was stranded. Paul Johnson stole second after a one out walk in the second, and Wilford White stole his 31st base of the season after being hit by a pitch in the 3rd. Prairie View A&M is currently threatening in the top of the third, so expect more bases to be swiped.
The crowd was late arriving, but has filled in nicely. The purple-clad Panther fans have been in the game from the first pitch, and number in the 300-500 range. Rice's crowd is significantly larger, but to this point most of their noise has been directed at the home plate umpire's strike zone.
Owl starter Craig Crow has clearly been distracted by the runners, and has thrown back-to-back walks to load the bases after hitting White with one out. RIghtfielder Eugene Edwards just singled to rightfield to score the first two Panther runs of the game, and the fans are on their feet with a "P-V-U" chant -- sound eerily similar to the "T-S-U" chants from 2004 for Owl fans... And Arthur Christal follows it up with his team-leading sixth homer of the season to give the Panthers a 5-1 lead early.
