Houston: Sun Devils, Bears Fight Against Elimination
By Jeremy Mills - June 04, 2006
Baylor and Arizona State have split four games this season, and this evening's rubber match is for the right to face Rice in tomorrow's championship game. In the bottom of the second, the Sun Devils lead the Bears 2-1.
Cory VanAllen started the first game of the regional for Baylor, but was removed after one inning when play was washed away on Friday. He's back on the mound for the Bears tonight, but so far he's struggled with his control. Through two innings, he's thrown 53 pitches buy only 27 have been strikes. The Sun Devils scored two runs in the second to take the lead. Brett Wallace and Willy Fox led off the inning with back-to-back singles, but Wallace was erased at third on a botched hit-and-run. Preston Paramore walked, and then an error on Andrew Romine's bunt attempt loaded the bases. VanAllen continued to struggle finding the plate, as walks to Mike Jones and C.J. Retherford brought in the first two runs of the game.
Mike Pankratz cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second with a home run off the flagpole in left field. Sun Devil southpaw Jeff Urlaub worked a perfect first inning while recording two strikeouts. So far he's recorded one out in the second with the Bears still threatening with a runner on first.
The crowd is much smaller and more subdued than during today's matinee. It seems like the Baylor fans are still out for dinner, as they have a much smaller contingent than earlier this afternoon. After cracking the 4,000 mark in attendance during Game 4, we're looking at a much smaller number in this losers' bracket tilt.
