Houston: Tempers Start to Flare
By Jeremy Mills - June 04, 2006
Noone in the press box saw what started it, but after Beamer Weems hit a 3-run homer to give Baylor the lead in the third, Sun Devil first baseman Ike Davis started to follow him around the bases. From the replay, it looked like Weems might have bumped the catcher after touching the plate, but nothing else major that we could see. Both coaches talked with the umpires, but no action was taken other than a pitching change for Arizona State. After 3 innings, 4-2 Baylor.
Two out rallies will kill you. ASU starter Jeff Urlaub retired the first two hitters in the bottom of the third. Back-to-back singles by Kevin Russo and Seth Fortenberry set the stage for Weems' three-run bomb and subsequent near fireworks on the field.
The Baylor faithful have made their way back into the ballpark for the nightcap, and were on their feet after the homer (first to cheer the Bears, then to vent at Arizona State coach Pat Murphy as he chatted with the umpires). Still a smaller green-and-gold contingent than the earlier game, but more enthusiastic with the improved results.

What happened in the first ASU/Baylor game? Did ASU coach Pat Murphy go to the mound and talk to the Baylor pitcher? If so, what caused THAT bizarre behavior?
