Houston: Who Ya' Rootin' For?
By Jeremy Mills - June 02, 2006
Rice answered back with two runs in the bottom of the third, but after five innings the Owls still trail Prairie View A&M 5-3.
The Panther faithful have a question-response cheer that they've been chanting for most of the time since they took the lead in the third. It starts with one fans "Who ya' rootin' for", to which the large Prairie View contingent responds "P-V-U". Rice fans heard a similar cheer in 2004, when a Herman Coachman 3-run homer sent Texas Southern past the Owls in the first game of the Houston regional that season.
It seems that first base umpire Danny Everett is rooting for the Panthers as well, as he just called Greg Buchanan out on a play where he was past first when Rashard Shorter caught the ball. That brought the Owl fans to their feet for the first time since Brian Friday cut the gap in half with a 2-run homer to left in the bottom of the third. Needless to say, Mr. Everett isn't a very popular man on campus. Except for questioning the home plate umpire frequently, the Rice fans have been on their hands most of the game.
