Lexington: Big Blue Heaven
By Chris Glasser - June 03, 2006
Kentucky fans have set up shop beyond the fence in right center field. There's bleachers, barbecue, and boos (though a noticeable absense of babes).
With the regular parking lot overflowing from local news vans and the cars of other media types (myself included), the grassy hill beyond the fence has become the de facto tailgating area for the Wildcat faithful. Someone brought in a huge truck and crammed eight or so lawn chairs onto the bed. They've also wheeled in a small, six-row bleacher (possibly stolen from the practice footbal facility next door).
The view from the little hill isn't much. Standing even at the best spot on the hill, you can see very little of center field and (thanks to the Blue Monster scoreboard in right) virtually none of right field. That said, you have a perfect sight line to watch the at bats and anything going on in the home team dugout.
Walking through the area, though, one gets a pretty good idea why this area isn't normally used for parking. Anything hit out to right is destined to find the roof or the hood or the windshield of a car. There's really no getting around it. There's the wall and then there's six rows of cars, stretching from the right field pole past the middle of center field.
While teams were taking batting practice today, fans seemed to have made their peace with the inherent danger of their seating arrangement. There were some guys standing on top of the bleachers, and every now and then they would call out "Head's up" and the rest of us would duck as a ball would come flying over the fence and inevitably pound somebody's SUV. Hardly anyone seemed to notice. Most just continued sipping their beers.
