Lexington: First Inning Fake Out

By Chris Glasser - June 03, 2006

Props to Notre Dame center fielder Alex Nettey on a first inning fake out.

With two outs and nobody on, Kentucky All-American Ryan Strieby hit a bomb to center field. The fans at Cliff Hagan erupted, thinking it might be a homer, but Nettey settled about 10 feet shy of the wall like he was going to catch it. Strieby stopped running as he rounded first and the fans went silent with disappointment.

We were all waiting for Nettey to squeeze it and have that be the inning, but then the ball came ricocheting off the big blue hitters' backdrop in straight away center. Nettey corraled it and nearly got Strieby at second.

It's tough to say if Nettey did what he did on purpose. He seemed to shrug and laugh afterward, like he might have lost it in the sun and just caught a lucky break.
