Lincoln: Day 2 Wrap-up
By Doug Kroll - June 04, 2006
Miami continued its all around great play on Saturday, picking up right where they left off on Friday night, winning 8-2 against Manhattan.
Miami has now outscored San Fran and Manhattan 19-4 in the first two games of its regional. Manhattan was just overmatched, including the bottom 5 of the Jaspers lineup going 0-18 with 2 walks. Not gonna win any ballgames with those types of numbers.
Manny Miguelez went 6IP 5H 2R (1ER) 2BB 5K's and threw 102 pitches and lowered his ERA to 4.01 and improved to 8-4. It was exactly what the Hurricanes needed, back to back starters got them to the 6th inning or later and they were able to save not only their bullpen, but their ace Scott Maine for the championship round.
Jesse Darcy had a tough act to follow after Chris Cody pitched a gem on Friday afternoon. Darcy didn't pitch bad, but he went 7IP gave up 12H 6ER 4BB 6K and threw 119 pitches in the loss that pushed his record to 5-3.
Offensively Miami had 6 players with 2 or more hits, and Roger Tomas picked up 3 and 2 RBI. Tommy Giles also added 2 RBI for the Canes. The only blemish for Miami tonight was the defense, as Danny Valencia committed two errors, while Tomas committed one. On Tomas' behalf, he made about a half a dozen excellent plays during the game, so it's tough to blame him for not being able to get the ball out of his glove one time. That is now 5 errors in 2 games for Miami, yet they haven't come back to hurt the Hurricanes.
It was interesting how the Nebraska fans that actually wanted to see some more baseball after Nebraska lost, were rooting for Manhattan. I guess they wanted the team that beat them to go ahead and knock off Miami. It could also be because of the football rivalry the two teams have. Rose Bowl in 2001 ring a bell? Anyway, once Miami took the lead there was even less than the 2210 announced in the crowd, as it was a very disappointing day. My guess is that the crowd will continue to go down as the games go along.
Tomorrow, San Fran or Manhattan will be hoping to play 2 games. Miami is certainly in the drivers seat as they will face the #4 guy for whomever comes out ahead. I'd have to say USF played a much better game against Nebraska than Manhattan did, but they both came out with wins and thats what counts. Well until tomorrow, have a good night, USF and Manhattan at 1pm Central.
