Lincoln: San Fran and Manhattan Warming Up
By Doug Kroll - June 04, 2006
USF and Manhattan will play this afternoon for a chance to meet Miami tonight here in Lincoln. USF will be playing in its second consecutive elimination game, and hope to feed off the pitching performance by Aaron Poreda yesterday, as he lifted his Dons over the heavily favored Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Now that Nebraska is out of the tournament, it was the first time this weekend that the parking lot was empty when i got here, and today i arrived an hour before gametime. Only a handful of beach towels laid out on the grassy areas, when the last 2 days they were full at this time. Look for attendance to be in the hundreds for this game, possibly more for tonight's championship game. The attendance will be more what USF and Manhattan are used to, as each team averaged between 100-300 fans for their home games throughout the year. It must have been a real kick for them to play in front of 8,000 the last couple of days, but they ruined the atmosphere by beating Nebraska!
Eating at the local diner again in town, I was a star attraction wearing my Miami radio shirt. I had six tables talking to me about the tournament, even while trying to eat my turkey club sandwhich! The disappointment around town is seen everywhere, as they'll have to wait another year to see their 'Huskers play. It must be tough though to know that teams are still playing on your home field and you are done for the year. Must be a tough pill to swallow.
The field received some rain last night as some thunderstorms swept through, a local Lincoln-ite told me that they probably received about a half inch from the storms, we were even under a severe thunderstorm warning, but i was so tired I didn't hear a thing! Only a small chance of rain today, it was lowered from about 50 percent down to about 20 percent, so hopefully the rain can hold off until we get out of here.
Manhattan will throw Josh Santerre this afternoon, in 12 appearances and 9 starts, Santerre is 3-4 with a 4.53 ERA. He's only thrown 45.2 innings and given up 45H 28R (23ER) 17BB and 29K's. Opponents are hitting .266 off of him. Santerre picked up the win in the MAAC championship game last week vs. LeMoyne College. He went 8 innings giving up 7 hits 3 runs, 2 earned, 0 walks and 4 strikeouts as the Jaspers won 7-3.
For the Dons, it will be Jason Dufloth who actually came into the game out of the bullpen on Friday night against Miami. Dufloth has started only two games this year, while coming into the game out of the 'pen 16 times. Dufloth is 2-1 with a 4.71 ERA. He's tossed 49.2 innings while giving up 54H and 33R, 26 earned. He's only walked 8 batters and struckout 34. Opponents are hitting .277 off of Dufloth. On Friday Dufloth went 2.2 innings giving up 2 runs, only 1 earned against the Hurricanes.
Random Stat of the day: With yesterday's win, San Francisco improved to 32-0 when leading after 8 innings of play. (wow)
Ok till later, enjoy championship sunday.
