Lincoln: USF-Nebraska Wrap Up/Miami preview

By Doug Kroll - June 03, 2006

Some Big Red fans are still in their seats, in shock, and the game ended close to a half hour ago now.

That's the feeling around this place and rightly so after some of these statistics. In the two games, the team left 18 men on base, so that's 1 runner left on per inning. Of those 18, they left 12 on base at second and third. I've never seen a team not capitalize in back to back games like I saw from this Huskers team. Their month long struggles continued into June and nothing could go right.

Give kudos to Aaron Poreda credit for USF, going 6.2IP with 4H 1ER 3BB 5K, and really worked around trouble like crazy. So Poreda picked up the win, Patrick McGuigan got the save, his 5th of the year, and adds to his USF career leading total. He went 2.1IP giving up just 1 hit, no runs, no walks, and struckout 1. Amazing job by the USF pitchers tonight.

Starter Tony Watson for Nebraska and was misfortuned from the beginning, 6.1IP 6H 5R but only 1ER. He walked only 1 and struck out 2. It was disappointing to see two errors and two balks come back to bite Watson like they did, but it's what ended up killing the Huskers.

As they make the field nice for the night cap, it's time for the Miami/Manhattan preview, even though I can't find out who is starting for Manhattan just yet! For Miami, it was announced to me that lefty sophomore Manny Miguelez would be starting, but of course that was announced before this first game, so I'm not sure if that changes Morris' outlook on whether or not to throw his ace Scott Maine today or tomorrow, I guess we'll find out shortly.

Miguelez had a great start to the season, but faultered once he started to face the great competition of the ACC. But Miguelez came back strong in the ACC tournament, after even losing his starting job earlier in ACC play. Miguelez has great stuff, and with the big lefty, it's just a matter of whether or not he can harness his control or not.

Manny Miguelez: 7-4 4.17ERA in 17 Starts and 18 appearances overall. He has one complete game, 95IP, 81H, 51R (44ER), 32BB, 71K and opponents are hitting .229 off him.

My guess for Manhattan would be Jesse Darcy who is 5-2 with a 3.72ERA in 14G 13GS, 3 Complete Games. 84.2IP, 79H, 39R (35ER), 30BB, 63K, opponents BA .248.

WHen i find out I'll post some more..until then, it's time for a snack and to prepare for another broadcast! Here's my shameless plug for the night.... www.wvum.org for tonight's broadcast
